Frames

Probably best described as the steel ribs of the ship. They act to stiffen the shell plating of the ship’s hull and resist the stresses caused by water pressure when the vessel is at sea. They also resist dry docking stresses and racking stresses. Ships are built either transversely or longitudinally framed.
